Things To Know Before Moving Artwork

Things to know before moving artwork

Any artwork is a valuable investment and moving it is a very delicate task. Hiring a Chicago moving company that is specialized in packing and moving art and antique pieces would be the best option if you are moving highly priced paintings. The professional Chicago moving Service Company carries out the process with the help of specialized packing supplies and moving equipment. However if the artwork is not of high value you can consider moving it by yourself. However ultimate care has to be taken while packing artwork and shipping them properly to the new location.

Moving unframed paintings

For packing unframed paintings you need to get some special packing supplies like cardboards, picture, mirror boxes and bubble wrap etc. You should not roll fine art piece as it the corners would get bent or creased. The artwork should be placed between multiple layers of thick cardboard so that it doesn't bend. The cardboard pieces should be held in place by securing it with tape on the outside. The cardboard coating the artwork should be placed in between two pieces of corrugated cardboard and tape on all sides securely. In case of canvas painting, it should be wrapped in 'acid free' paper to ensure that the art is not affected by wrapping materials. The box should be wrapped in bubble wrap again for safety. Most importantly make sure to mark the box in bold and bright as 'fragile' and give instructions to the movers.

Moving framed paintings

You need to get strong quality packing boxes for packing artworks that are framed. For framed paintings, mirror pack boxes are the best suited ones. If the painting is large, you need to join two or more packing boxes by joining them. Begin the packing by wrapping the artwork completely using bubble wrap. Make sure that you cover all its corners by using corner protectors. Take a masking tape and use it across the front of the painting in X shape for securing the artwork even if the glass breaks during the move. While placing the framed artwork inside the box, secure it using additional bubble wraps.

During chipping, you need to make sure that the picture or mirror boxes containing artwork should be placed in the upright position itself. The boxes should never be laid straight. Before hiring the movers, you need to make sure if they would provide insurance for the artwork. Moving artwork by yourself may not be the wisest thing to do. So hire a Chicago moving company that specialize in shipping art work and monitor the way packing is done.
